One Dock To House Them All

So much storage media, so little time. And so it goes. We’ve got USB drivces, hard drives, and SD drives galore. And each one of these storage units have their data accessed in different ways. Such an unproductive mess. It’s easy for a card to get lost in the shuffle.

And then there was the Brando Multi-Functional Dock Station, the ultimate in storage consolidation. This gadget from Brando allows you to dock USB + eSATA + 2 hubs + 4 cards, all consolidated into one super duper storage interface.

The Multi-Functional Dock Station offers full support for SDHC and mini SDHC formats, along with a long list of other standard flash card formats. And of course, how could you miss the creme de la creme of the Brando device; its housing of a full 2.5? or 3.5? HDD drive.

So not only do you get plenty of room for all of your portable storage devices, but you can also externalize your HDD with the docks built-in HDD enclosure. All of this integration comes at a pretty reasonable price, only $79.

This is allegedly the world’s first solar-powered speedboat, the Dutch-built Czeers MK1. The 33-foot aquatic transportation device is capable of doing about 30 knots (~35 MPH) and is powered entirely from energy generated from its 14 square meters of photovoltaic cells. No word on cost, but who cares, I definitely couldn’t afford one (if you think you could though we should be totally be friends). So, you think it’ll make an appearance in the next Bond flick? I sure hope not — I’d hate to see it destroyed in one way or another. But what I wouldn’t hate to see is the return of Pussy Galore. Unless they insisted on using the original actress from Golfinger (Honor Blackman, 82). If I saw Bond hitting that in the theater I’d gouge my eyes out with the straw from a $6 soda. Actually, forget about Galore, they should just try to get her granddaughter, Snatch Abunch.

Why Startups Fail

An entrepreneur recently asked David Feinleib why startups fail. Startups fail because they run out of money. You’re probably thinking, “Tell me something I don’t already know!” Read on and you’ll see that statement is deceptive in its simplicity

This post is based both on David’s experience as an investor and as entrepreneur (when he’has boot-strapped and venture-funded).

Solar Powered iPhone?

Solar power is a great source to get power to your devices. It might not be the quickest way to charge something, but solar energy is free once you pay for the initial parts. Apple have filed a patent which involves placing solar cells on to portable devices.

This would allow an extra source of power for your phone allowing you to charge and use it where ever there was sunlight present. The photovoltaic cells could be stacked under the LCD allowing for a large solar surface to suck up the suns rays. The patent also suggests the state of the solar cells could be displayed next to the power indicator on the screen to let you know how much juice is being created.

Although current solar cells would not power the beast of an iPhone real time (ie, it would take a good number of hours to charge it first), it more then likely would in the future when Apple can make the phone consume a lot less power to run and yet, provide the same services it offers now.

The day where devices just work with out charging will be great and probably isn’t that far around the corner.

DIY: $30,000 Stereo System

Manitoba native Michael Tarasenco built a $50,000 home theater with $30,000 worth of stereo equipment. After many years of being an audio junkie, Michael decided he wanted a theater in his new home. Using no outside labor, the basement was renovated and a theater was built in a 13′ x 28′ area. Watching projected movies on a 92′ retractable Da-Lite screen must be sweet. Couple that with a room modified for great audio and you have quite a multimedia experience going on.

Sprint and Samsung today announced that its joint-venture wireless infrastructure, better known as WiMAX, is ready for service. This comes after years of scrutiny against Sprint for basically fucking everything up along the way. Still, mistakes aside, WiMAX looks to bring a new generation of high-bandwidth web surfing to our laptops.

Have you missed out on WiMAX news in the past? Not sure what it is? This little bit from Wikipedia explains it wisely:

WiMAX, the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a telecommunications technology aimed at providing wireless data over long distances in a variety of ways, from point-to-point links to full mobile cellular type access. It is based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, which is also called WirelessMAN. The name “WiMAX” was created by the WiMAX Forum, which was formed in June 2001 to promote conformance and interoperability of the standard. The forum describes WiMAX as “a standards-based technology enabling the delivery of last mile wireless broadband access as an alternative to cable and DSL” (and also to HSPA).

With speeds up to 70 Mbps and Siemens announcing the SE680 WiMAX Modem, 2008 and 2009 are gearing up to be the year for broadband access across multiple devices. It’s only a matter of time before someone starts sniffing out WiMAX networks and breaking their encryption.

Today is Bike-to-Work Day. We know what you’re thinking. Biking to work is great and all, but it’s just not practical, right? Wrong. Think of the advantages. With the deluge of budget airlines making their presence felt all over the world, no thanks to rising fuel and operating costs, it is nice to see a major airline continue to make profit without compromising on the quality of service. Singapore Airlines has just announced that it will be offering flights featuring iPod and iPhone connectivity on KrisWorld starting from yesterday. This privilege can be found on all newly reconfigured Business Class Airbus A340-500 flights between New York and Singapore, as well as routes between Los Angeles and Singapore from this August onwards. I suppose after forking out enough cash to buy a kidney (and then some) to fly halfway across the world, it makes perfect sense to have this added touch of technology available to travelers who prefer to watch movies of their own choice on the iPod/iPhone instead of subjecting their senses to the mercies of in-flight entertainment.

Each seat in Singapore Airlines’ KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system will be accompanied by a 15.4? widescreen LCD display that makes it just nice to watch your desired TV shows and movies, while active noise-cancellation headphones further enhance the in-flight entertainment experience by doing away with external distractions. According to Yap Kim Wah, Senior Vice-President Product & Services, for Singapore Airlines, “Customers on our all-business class Airbus A340-500 flights now have an incredible way to enjoy their own iPod and iPhone music and video on the KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system. This is yet another example of our philosophy of creating customer satisfaction by providing an enhanced sense of choice and control.”

Listening to your iPod and iPhone won’t cancel out announcements and instructions made by Singapore Airlines cabin crew and pilots, so you know exactly when meals will be served as well as the weather conditions on the ground while going through the Transformers movie for the umpteenth time.

As men lumber through their elderly years, often times the game of golf becomes a welcomed getaway into nature. A place to go for sanctuary, away from the nagging wife, and away from money gobbling kids. By the time men reach the “average” golfing age, they have either lost a considerable amount of muscle strength, yet are still too full of pride to pay a caddy to lug around their clubs, or just don’t want to miss out on the beautiful landscape as they trudge across their country club’s course.

The three-wheeled Shadow Caddy is a fully autonomous set of wheels for the golf course. While you place your golf bag in the cart of the Shadow Caddy, the device loyally follows you around the green, without the need of a tip at every hole.

The Shadow Caddy works using a “pocket-sized” transmitter (the pocket-size being a matter of debate, depending on the size of your pockets) which is worn on the body of the golfer. This transmitter helps the Caddy navigate safely and accurately as it communicates with its multiple on-board CPUs and a collision detection system to keep an eye out for any obstacles. The Caddy has two settings, “Follow-Me” for normal use and “Park” for those times where you don’t want a damn robotic caddy chasing you around.

The Shadow Caddy is one of the 21st finalist of the Next Big Thing Awards, and is expected to roll out to the public for rental use only. The Caddy is currently being tested on four different Melbourne golf courses where you can view the device zooming along at an impressive speed.
